There is a grace period once you get the insurance, but before? Unless you have a binder or policy number in effect before a claim, I do not see why they would cover you.

However, a friend did total a car before she got the insurance and the dealer got reimbursed somehow. But another friend totaled her used car and didn't have insurance, and had a large balance outstanding on her credit.
