Hey Keith,

Are you a former officer or was your father?

I myself am a former Naval Officer.

: : The name of the company is "USAA" not "USSA" and the company is not sponsored by the Federal Government but they were set-up as a non-profit organization designed to benefit its members. I know that eligibility was limited to military officers and certain levels of the Federal Government. You would need to call their 800 number to see if you are eligible to join.

: : They have some of the best rates out there and most companies, once they hear you have USAA, know that they can't compete. In fact, all members have an SSA (subscribers savings account) and the company credits each of these accounts with the divisible surplus of the company and at times they authorize a payout to all members and it is usually a percentage of you account balance. So, not only do they have incredible rates, they even give you some money back.

: : Yes, they give you money back even though you only have P/C insurance with them. You are not required to have life insurance through them to benefit from the SSA. In fact, I don't have any life insurance with them. I only have Homeowners and Auto.

: : There is another organization that was set-up for enlisted personnel but I can't recall the name right now. Good Luck.

: : : USSA is not a Federal Government sponsored auto policy that caters to US Military personnel.

: : : Neither is Lutheran Aid a insurance company that only caters to Lutherans and so on and so with a few insurance companies that like to go after a certained controlled market.

: : : When purchasing any type of insurance your best bet is to compare "Apples to Apples" premium charges and policy coverage benefits.

: : : You may also want to consider convienence for service to policyholder customers and the financial stability of the company to pay
: : : claims.

: : : Personal lines P&C policies such auto and homeowners insurance can change from year to year depending upon the claims submitted to the company.

: : : What may be the least premium expense today could possibly be one of the higher premium charges for the next year.

: : : My view is, when it boils down to P&C personal lines, I see no problem each year shopping for a less expensive premium and compare "Apples to Apples".

: : : Ken Young
: : : xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

: : : : My father was a former military personnel and I was looking for a more reasonable insurance company and wanted to know if I was eligible for coverage with USSA.

: : : : Marilyn E. Jones

:
: Marilyn--call them up; I have been a "member" for 12 years and have no complaints. They have consistently been the best rates and are rated high for service by consumer reports as well. In fact, Farmers calls about once a year and never calls back with a quote when I tell them I have USAA...

: The basic requirement for USAA (United Services Automobile Association) is that your father had to have been an officer. They are accepting some current non-commissioned officers now, but as far as I know not the offspring of former non-coms. If he was an officer, you qualify.

: Other possible qualifying memberships--FBI, US Health Service, CIA.
