: COBRA was put in place to assure health coverage due to a change in employment.
: Many people do not realize that the law allows the employer to charge the full employer cost of the coverage PLUS 2% for administration costs. Former employees faced with the COBRA option are many times shocked at the rate they can be charged for continuation of coverage.
: There may also be state specific statutes that apply to a situation as well as the federal COBRA guidelines.
: Many times a person doesn't have a choice if there are ongoing health issues to be dealt with. It's not pleasant to have to write the check, but at least they can maintain coverage. Affordability has nothing to do with it.
: : I recently (01-07-03) was terminated from my job. When I was an employee my insurance cost $222.00 per month for the family. Now that I am no longer an employee, I can purchase the same coverage for $914.45 per month. My question is: I thought the main reason cobra was established was for affordable insurance when not employeed.
If you are in good health, find other coverage with companies such as blue cross, unicare, celtic. If not, check with your state risk pool for health insurance.
