Not entirely correct:

Collision coverage (involved here) covers damage to your vehicle whether you are at fault or not. It covers collision with another vehicle or object. If your vehicle were hit by an unknown vehicle (say, in a parking lot) it is still collision.

Comprehensive covers such perils as theft, hail, and fire.

Believe it or not, "collision" with a deer or other animal is actually covered under "comprehensive" damage.

That said, it is good advice to consider carefully whether you wish to put in a claim for a small amount of damage; if its under $1,000, consider repairing it on your own dime and saving your coverage.

: Collision.

: Collision insurance coverage pays for damage caused in an automobile accident, when you are "at fault" (sounds like you were).

: Comprehensive covers damage caused to your vehicle by any unknown party or "act of God".

: By my own experience, be very cautious about making a claim. Your premium can really go up or even be cancelled if you start making too many. Consider your deductible amount and the consequences before making a claim.

: Also, you may not want to use your real e-mail address here.

: Good luck.
