I've been a member of USAA for almost fifty-three years now. Generally, their service and their rates have been competitive. But for teh past three years I have been unable to buy their insurance, simply because State Farm, American Express, Geico and others quote lower premiums than they do. When I ask USAA reps about this, their answer is a very polite "tough!". Of late, when I try to discuss premiums, coverage, or investments with these folks, about half the time they come across as very patronizing. Makes it hard to deal with them. I have decided that the biggest problem is this: They have just gotten too big, and the average customer, like me, really does not matter very much. They seem obsessed with hiring retired high ranking military officers, who are undoubtedly very intelligent and very capable people -- but they have no experience whatever in the insurance field and have no background in dealing with the average customer--they expect us to defer to their former rank and position, and this attitude is just a part of their personality. Unfortunate.
