An HO policy is not the same as a Dwelling Fire policy. Homeowner policies are for primary homes, occupied by their owner. Rental homes as a rule are covered by Dwelling Fire policies which do not cover contents or much of anything else. What the agent should have done, IF you talked about policies at all, was tell you that the old house had to be rewritten as a dwelling fire now that it had become a rental.

Who paid for the insurance on the old house? Was it mortgagee paid or insured paid? If it was mortgagee paid or what's called an impound account it's possible someone slipped up somewhere. It does occasionally happen. Either Prudential didn't invoice the mortgagee or the mortgagee didn't pay the invoice on time. If however it's an insured paid policy that means that you would have received a renewal offer prior to renewal AND a notice of impending cancellation when you did not respond to the renewal offer. Your Prudential agent could have ten or twenty thousand or more accounts under his office. As a rule an agent will not do anything about an insured billed account where the insured has not responded to renewal and cancellation notices. Most though not all agents A)assumed the insured has other plans and B)it is not possible for the agent to flag every renewal offer for the tens of thousands of policies he might have.

Should the customer service person have told you when you called? That depends on the conversation. You're not clear on exactly what you discussed. Did you discuss the old house at all? Unless the CSR pulled your file for your conversation and had it in front of him or her, or unless you specifically brought it up, there is no way he or she could have known anything about the policy being up for renewal.

Agents and Customer Service People are not mind readers. If you just asked for something like a mailing address, they probably did not pull your file to give you that. Without pulling your file there's no way in the world they could have known anything about your properties or their renewal dates. If you don't ask, they can't tell you.

So the question is, what EXACTLY did you talk about?

: Today I realized that there is NO such thing as customer service!! Being a client of Prudential since 1998 for home insurance, I would expect better service and to be treated with more respect! During a recent move our home insurance was canceled. We called to get info (mailing addresses) when our policy was about to be canceled so we could close on another house. Did a customer service rep tell us that it was going to be canceled - NOOOOOO, they just gave the address so we could close on our new house. (we are renting our old one). We were told they could do nothing. Said it was it was past the statue of time. Told us to look up a local agent in the phone book to get another policy issued. After that type of service, I think NOT. Will never be a Prudential Client AGAIN!
