I just stopped by my agent's office to inform them that I was moving, and got a shocking, and possibly devistating revelation. I was in a VERY minor accident a few months ago. I rolled into the truck in front of me at a drunk driving checkpoint, there was no damage done, to my car (grand am with a plastic bumper) or to the truck I hit. Of course, because the troopers were right there, there was a police report. When I asked my agent about it, I was told that unless more than $750 was paid out in a claim, it would not effect my premium. I found out today that $1,520 was paid out on it for property damage, and that my premium is going to nearly double. The truck I hit was not worth $750, I could have bought it three times over for $1,500. I think that the other driver may have defrauded the insurance company. How would I go about dealing with this, there is no way I could possibly pay the increased premium, and if I can't drive I can't work, three years is an awfully long time.
