: You are absoulutely right! I joined Bankers Life and Casualty right out of College, and not only did my training managers majically happen to make all their sales when I wasn't there, but I ended up OWING them money for the insurance they took out on me. I was lucky I quit after a month; they would have sucked my dry. I wonder how they sleep a night, lying to naive kids right out of college.
: : : : A word to the wise. If you are considering a career in the Insurance Idustry...Don't be a captive agent. No matter how alluring the promises you are made, 90% are untruths. I worked for Bankers Life and Casualty for 5 years, and was forced to embelish how "easy" it was to be an insurance agent. The deceptive sales tactics you are asked to undertake, the low compentsation, and the hours you are required to work as a 1099 employee, make Bankers and many other Captive agencies, very unattractive careers. Be a broker!! Be independent. Place your loyalty with the client, not an Insurance Company. If you do this, it will be a longer and more difficult struggle. However, the rewards you will reap in the end, far surpass what you "could" do with a captive agency.

: : : I agree with you on both points. In most cases the Insurance company in the end is not loyal to you!
: : Being a broker is different. The insurance company is not expected to be loyal to you, therefore there are not any expectations on your part. If you know people who are considering being an agent or planner, have them steer clear of all captive agencies. Especially Bankers Life and Casualty.
The manager have a license to steal. Not from the clients , but from the agents. They take on the phone inquires and good leads, while expecting you to cold call. The Vegas office in 1984 was different with Gino Giocamazza and Larry Schwienfurt..good men. But Jeff Murphy and the current crook in Madison west are terrible.
I was doing well in Madison after I transferred from Vegas. Murphy quashed my management track and I foolish quit and went to Prinipal Financial Had a great career going and should have transferred back to Vegas. All the 10 years I was in the business I have got one policies renewal to show for it. My policy! Start out as a broker part time, dont quit your day job and after a few years you will be doing alright.
