We have had many problems with USAA Home Insurance since the hurricaine. We reported our claim in early September--it took USAA 7 weeks just to get a written estimate to us, at which time they told us to secure a contractor on our own, and gave us half of the money for thier estimate upfront. By then, contractors were all backed up on repairs, so it was another 3 weeks before we could get any estimates. All estimates were three times as the total USAA said it would pay. We tried contacting our USAA adjuster, but her phone had been disconected. So we called USAA claims about the estimate discrepency, and they said we couldn't make any permanent repairs until they sent out ANOTHER adjuster to look at the damage yet again, but they wouldn't commit to when that that adjuster might come out. That adjuster came out the second week of December. The second adjuster said we didn't need the work done in the contractor's estimates, and recommend three companies that worked with USAA instead (companies not mentioned in the previous three months for some reason). We called the first on the list--and what do you know, thier estimate was pretty much the same as the other contractors we received estimates from--three times what USAA said it would pay. Now we are told to wait for a THIRD time for a USAA adjuster to come out again before contracting for permanent repairs. We have roofing, siding, drywall, and water damage. I am afraid of getting mold (which USAA won't cover). It has been over three months since we reported our claim, and USAA has not authorized permanent repairs. Rain and snow continue, and the water damage grows. We got a roof repair on our own, without authorization, to mitigate the damage, but it has not eliminated all water damage as some is still coming in from where the soffit and siding is torn up. I almost wish we had never called USAA at all and just paid for everything out of pocket, and we would have had it all done by early October at the latest. Now it looks like we'll end up paying a lot out of pocket anyway, especially since the damage grows and USAA keeps delaying. I don't understand USAA's attitude or its delays, or why it treats customers this way. I heard it used to be a very good company.
