Operating Lease

What is the definition of Operating Lease?
An operating lease is a type of lease agreement for equipment or property, typically structured with a term shorter than the asset's useful life. The lessor remains responsible for maintenance and servicing. This lease does not result in asset ownership transfer to the lessee.
Using Operating Lease in an Example

A company may enter into an operating lease for office printers. The lease agreement lasts for three years, although the printers have an expected useful life of five years. Throughout the lease term, the leasing company is responsible for any required maintenance or repairs.
